Cartoon Art Museum benefit at Pixar

We have a great event to benefit the Cartoon Art Museum happening this saturday at Pixar, there might be even some tickets left for purchase if you’re so inclined. Among the many wonderful things Michael Johnson has been organizing to make it a special day at Pixar, we’ll be showing La Luna and I’ll be talking about the making of it. I also just finished this watercolor for the art auction section (which is always an amazing and unique chance to get yourself some original art by many talented Pixarians).

UPDATE – you can bid on-line here on this watercolor and many other pieces by amazing artist such as Ronnie del Carmen, Daniela Strijleva, Pete Docter, Scott Morse, Derek Thompson and more.

Here’s a nice write up by Charles Solomon about tomorrow’s Art Auction Benefit. Be sure to check all the great artwork coming in at the Maverix Blog, we spent a good part of last night hanging most of the show. And here’s my watercolor, titled 金魚-Kingyo (11″x14″). I love to draw japanese streets with strange characters in them, this is drawn from a photo I took in Gyon, Kyoto. A fox, a badger and a kappa are mourning over a little dead goldfish. I hope to see many of you there!

My thoughts and prayers go to all the friends and people of Chile. Starting a SketchCrawl day, a day where I always joyfully think of people around the world, with the terrifying news of the Earthwake was really hard. I tried to get over the feeling of helplessness and headed out to draw. In San Francisco we met around the dogpatch area and what a great place to sketch it is! After having crawled in many different neighborhoods of this city it was really fun to find a new one to draw in … we also once again dodged bad weather, there was drizzle maybe for 5 minutes but the rest of the day had a stunning mix of cloudy and sunny skies. Thanks for all of you who joined in SF and all of you from the rest of the world. What if

What if I did a random little pencil and watercolor drawing everyday and put it on my office wall as in the photo? It might be really interesting to see the wall after a couple of months … That is if I can keep it up of course … Might be hard on some days but still would be fun to try. Lately with more responsabilities at work I find myself drawing less and less and that can be frustrating for me. I hate feeling rusty (thank god the next sketchcrawl is almost here). Earlier this week though I watched the documentary “Beautiful loosers” (which i’d recommend) and I found it pretty inspiring. I think I might try and slowly cover this wall … See what it looks like after a while…

It’s really fun to draw my daughter today, she’s wearing such a nice and colorful outfit. I bought this agenda in France last month, great design … and I’m trying to fill it with drawings of Fio … when I can. And you know, for some reason today felt more like a Sunday than a Saturday, that must be why I drew on the wrong day.

She’s drawing foxes … like me … at weird hours in the night. Though I draw them on my kitchen table. So here’s one more watercolor from the exhibition at Galerie Arludik (Click on the image at that link to see some of the amazing pieces by Tadahiro and Ronnie). If you want to see some of the pieces together I made this set on Flickr. The layout of this specific one is pretty much taken from a beautiful photo from the pages of the magazine Kyoto Journal. Really good issue too. I’ve looked at a lot of photography from the characteristic narrow streets of Gyon. Makes me want to fly to Kyoto this moment!

What a great sketchcrawl this past saturday! It was hands down the most attended with artists participating and gathering in more than 90 different locations around the globe. Don’t miss checking out all the drawings on the forums! It really still blows my mind that on these days we are soo many around the world drawing at the same time, it’s such a good feeling. A shout goes out to San Paolo in Brazil with a record 120 artists sketchcrawling there! Amazing! In San Francisco we weren’t too far behind with roughly 100 artists participating. It was really fun seeing everyone at the De Young Museum at the end of the afternoon. Below are my day’s watercolors. I started with sketching my daughter, whom I’ve honestly found for quite some time hard to capture. She’s so ridiculously adorable it’s hard to do it justice. These are among the first attempts I feel pretty good about. So, that’s it … and for next SketchCrawl early April! We’ll have a date asap!
