I was rooting for Jillian Tamaki in this year’s Ignatz awards. So I was so happy to see Skim by Jillian and her cousin Mariko Tamaki winning the Outstanding Graphic Novel category. Winners were announced at the Small Press Expo this weekend, full list here.

Pandora

Have you tried Pandora? The Music Genome Project internet radio? It’s a little limited in the scope, I wish they could start adding some international music on it, but it still really works wonderfully. I was in a slow and quiet mood last tonight and there’s this Tom Waits song I absolutely love: “Take it with me”. It came to mind seeming to fit the mood so I entered it and the following ten songs Pandora chose were just amazing, a great fit, completely in that mood, but also from diverse and interesting artists. Ultimately that’s what Pandora is great for, making you discover artists you might not know of but that are up your alley, but it’s sure is amazing at hitting a certain mood. Here’s the beautiful ending lyrics of the Tom Waits song. Happy sunday.

Love this video for Cornelius‘ Omstart. I’ve had the luck of seeing him live at Bimbos 365 a year ago or so for his Synchronized Sensuous Tour and it was a blast. Videos play a huge part of his live performances.

Doodle all year

Just bought this wonderful book by Taro Gomi, who if you didn’t already know happens to be the man behind Mozzarella the monkey. Yep he designed her. I just absolutely love these simple and charming drawings. He’s really channeling the little kid in himself, something we should all do more often with our drawing: just going for it without being self-conscious. All his coloring and sketching books for toddlers are so charming and witty, they really work in the imagination of a kid. It’s a little early for Fio but I bet she’ll be scribbling all over them in no time, in the meanwhile I’m enjoying them.

I received a couple of days ago the “Gake no ue no Ponyo” image album (which is a sort of “pre-soundtrack” usually Studio Ghibli releases for their upcoming movies) and I must say I love the music Hisaishi Joe has started composing for this movie. It’s been a pleasure to listen to it with my newborn baby daughter, it fits the joyful mood of my household. It’s reminiscent in feel of the Tonari no Totoro soundtrack. Miyazaki’s upcoming movie seems to have a younger audience in mind than at least his last 2 or 3 movies. I think we might have another masterpiece like Totoro coming our way (the movie is opening in July in Japan).

If you’ve read the Venice Chronicles (specifically around these couple of pages) you’ve probably seen this animation I did for my wife’s birthday a couple of years back. You might have seen also this little silly bit I did a while back. Ah the things one does for love. Well, I did an another one this past year and I hadn’t shared it with you yet. So here it is! The wonderful song I used is by the amazing Shugo Tokumaru (The track is Such a Color from the album Night Piece). I love both of Tokumaru’s albums, the kind of music that makes you wanna animate to every single track. Anyway, hope you enjoy these.
