SketchTravel and Room to read

I’d like to share with you an important project I’ve had the luck to help in a small way. I’m sure you’ve heard about it by now: SketchTravel!
Sketchtravel is a unique international charity project brainchild of my good friend Dice Tsutsumi and Gerald Guerlais. The idea is to benefit Room to Read, an international non-profit dedicated to increasing child literacy in developing countries. You can find all the wonderful details about the SketchTravel adventure and its final Art Auction coming on October 17th in Brussels at their brand new SketchTravel website. One of the important things SketchTravel has done is pull together a diverse and amazing community of artists from all around the world, even more importantly the project’s goal is to build one library ($20k) and sponsor one local children’s book publishing ($15k). I ask you kindly to support in anyway you can this wonderful project. There are different ways to give a hand:
1) Donate to Room to Read.
2) Visit and “like” SketchTravel’s Facebook page.
3) Re-share this information to spread the word.

Reading Venice Chronicles

Click on the link below to see a little iphone video of me flicking through Venice Chronicles on the ipad. Forgive me the low quality video but I think it gives you an overall idea of it works. It’s really an interestingly different experience from reading the book. Don’t get me wrong, I love books and I certainly intend to keep on making them, but Whamix really gives us a wonderful tool to make a very immersive reading experience. On the ipad we can really zoom in on given areas of the page and guide the eye from one point of interest to the next. It really features the artwork and its details much more closely! Anyway, let me know what you think!

Venice Chronicles on your ipad

I have to tell you about Whamix! It’s a brand new ipad comicbook reader that Apurvah Sha (One of the uberminds here at Pixar) has developed in the last few months. When I saw a test on a few pages of The Venice Chronicles I was immediately sold. It really simulates the eye movement on a page and it features the artwork in a beautiful way. Through this reader we can control each area of interest through a page, so the panels get zoomed in and featured in a way that even a book can’t give you. I really think it’s a unique reading experience and the Venice Chronicles on it look like a whole new experience. I have a little video of skimming through a couple of pages, will upload it asap!
So give this a try if you have an ipad and please let me know what you think! All feedback welcome. The library of titles on Whamix! is expanding everyday (In fact I hope to add SketchCrawling Vol1 and Vol2 as soon as possible) but I’m already in great company with some of my friends and pixar co-workers: Ted Mathot, Bobby Rubio, Scott Morse and Everett Downing to name a few.

The nice folks at ComicBookResources have just posted a review of Venice Chronicles. I published the book with AdHouse almost two years ago, so this was a surprise … a very welcome surprise at that. Check it out (by scrolling down a little at the link).

Here’s the little silly Tshirt I just got printed for ComicCon. Yoga! You might remember this piece for the SketchTravel project, I turned it into this strange shirt. It’s an organic cotton American Apparel shirt, screen printed with five colors. The printers had their work cut out for this one but they sure pulled it off. Come get one in SD! I might be able to take a few online sales after the con, for yoga lovers only.

Heading to San Diego

I will be attending San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am at Booth #4800 with friends Ronnie del Carmen, Scott Morse and Jeff Pidgeon. This is an exciting year given that the Venice Chronicles is nominated for an Eisner Award! I’m also making a new t-shirt just for the Con … photos as soon as I get it from the printer. Hope to see you down there.

Hey there’s some nice Venice Chronicles news. I was nominated for a Will Eisner Comic Book Award under the category “Best Painter/Multimedia Artist”. You can read all the nominations details right here. Great to see some friends like Scott Morse and Kazu Kibuishi nominated. Also great to see one of my favorite books from last year, Jillian and Mariko Tamaki‘s Skim doing so well with many a nomination. In other news, for some strange reason, Venice Chronicles keeps on being “Temporarily out of stock” on Amazon. Seems like some of the distribution channels are a little clogged up, pretty frustrating given it’s status has been like this for months. Well, in the meanwhile I have plenty left and you can purchase the award nominated book straight from me (with doodle and signature). Oh and one last thing, thank you all so much for the wonderful reviews on amazon, they are really encouraging! Thanks.

Shuppatsu ten

I can’t wait for this book to be out. Miyazaki’s Shuppatsu ten is getting a US release by Viz in July. The book contains writings and essays about film-making and philosophy by MiyaSan. And since we’re on the subject, I was overjoyed to hear about Miyazaki San making a new manga for ModelGraphix magazine, and a comic about planes on top of that!

Hey it’s the year of the cow! I owe you a drawing of one I think, everyone is doing it, but to tell you the truth I don’t have one so here’s a picture of me. That should do. So Happy New Year! I got a nice little surprise yesterday that made me feel good about the new year’s start: Venice Chronicles is in a top ten list of comics of 08 at Newsarama. Neat, thanks Caleb, glad you enjoyed the book.

Oh and this brand new review just popped up at Omnivoracious. Here’s a quote:”Released in December and largely overlooked, Enrico Casarosa’s The Venice Chronicles is a little gem of a book that should be on everyone’s list to buy for themselves and for friends”.
