Dice’s beautiful short for SketchTravel

I love THIS! My good friend Dice Tsutsumi just finished this wonderful touching short film about SketchTravel. He painted all this on photoshop!!! Such a painstaking process, a real labor of love! And it’s all for a great cause, build libraries in third world countries! Congratulations Dice!!! I can’t wait to celebrate SketchTravel next week in Brussels!! SketchTravel and Room to read

I’d like to share with you an important project I’ve had the luck to help in a small way. I’m sure you’ve heard about it by now: SketchTravel!
Sketchtravel is a unique international charity project brainchild of my good friend Dice Tsutsumi and Gerald Guerlais. The idea is to benefit Room to Read, an international non-profit dedicated to increasing child literacy in developing countries. You can find all the wonderful details about the SketchTravel adventure and its final Art Auction coming on October 17th in Brussels at their brand new SketchTravel website. One of the important things SketchTravel has done is pull together a diverse and amazing community of artists from all around the world, even more importantly the project’s goal is to build one library ($20k) and sponsor one local children’s book publishing ($15k). I ask you kindly to support in anyway you can this wonderful project. There are different ways to give a hand:
1) Donate to Room to Read.
2) Visit and “like” SketchTravel’s Facebook page.
3) Re-share this information to spread the word.

James Jean’s Rift

James Jean certainly doesn’t need any introduction, he sure is taking the art world by storm. But I just found out about Rift, a wonderful book he’s made with Chronicles. And it just blows my mind, beautiful!!!

Fellini, Agassi, Saint-Ex

What an unlikely trio uh? But I’m currently reading these three books. They are all three wonderful reads. “I Fellini” is irreverent and funny, “Open” is a total page turner and “The Little Prince” in Italian is a treat.

I did some book shopping that made me quite happy this weekend. The first is a kids book I got at Konokuniya by the prolific Taro Gomi, Kingyouga nigeta. The Goldfish escaped. Been really loving gomi’s work, it’s so much fun to share it with Fio. I was also really impressed to read that this is a reprint, the book actually came out in the late seventies. Amazing how it doesn’t look dated at all. The second great find are some great pamphlets and booklets about old planes at a used books store. Mostly machines from world war one or between the wars. I absolutely love to read information and see old photos of this type. Makes me want to draw and watercolor some planes!! Tons of great reference.

Sanjay’s Ramayana

Another amazingly talented co-worker here Pixar, Sanjay Patel has just released a fantastic book Ramayana: Devine Loophole with Chronicles Books. This is a four year in the making labor of love for Sanjay and it shows, every page is filled with an astounding amount of beautifully designed detail. I was totally blown away by his dedication and craft when I first laid my eyes on this feat of a book. I am so happy for Ronnie with his brand new book coming out in matter of days. My name is Dug is written by Kiki Thorpe and illustrated by Ronnie del Carmen, it features one of the stars of the upcoming Pixar film UP: Dug. It’s a beauty of a book and I can’t wait to put my hands on a couple of copies. Fio is gonna love it. Check Ronnie’s blog for some photos and details. He’s so giddy about it all he’s been carrying his preview copy around with him all the time. Anyyyway, it’s not a bad year Ronnie, not a bad year … and it’s only march.
