Final Venice Chronicles cover!
Unfortunately I lost the rough thumbnail I had done for the Gondola piece. The basic layout though started as a vertical one with me drawing on the footsteps of a canal and Marit passing on a gondola. I wanted a lot of water to fill a good amount of the cover, so to fit the title in white. When I started drawing it though I kept on adding details on the left and I ended up with more of an horizontal layout. Here’s a couple of different designs for the cover, trying to use a little bit more of the artwork in the first one.

Ultimately I went back to the first idea and decided I didn’t need the subtitle. So here it is finally the cover for the Venice Chronicles!

The book is about to go to print, it will be available in October, it’ll be distributed by the fine folks at AdHouse Books! We’ll be at APE with it. Unfortunately I won’t be making it to ComicCon this year but I am planning to make some postcards to send down with a few of the friends attending.
All the steps of the “Making of” this cover are here: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh post.

How neat! It really gave me a feeling of what maybe the story promises to be about — the feeling of some kind of connection between the little man on the steps and the little woman on the boat…
So cool how the final really seems to sing a little more than the others — really worth all the changes you did to get there!
I really enjoy looking at your watercolors, sir!

Perfect, eye catching, speaks of Venice. The blue water is beautiful. Your wife is featured which is important part of the book. Great cover!!!!
You have to check out Kepler’s book store in Menlo Park where there is lot of soccer moms dreaming of Venice. Also, give me postcards. I will ask my friend who is owner of Pilate studios to carry the postcards.

Gorgeous. Funny that you mentioned Richard Scarry earlier- your work here has that same sense of a world filled with energy and positivity that I used to really tap into as a kid (unconsciously, I guess) in the Scarry books.
Lovely stuff!

it’s gorgeous. Love the tone, feel the content before even reading the title. In fact, my eyes for from the guy drawing to the title, then to the girl, then back to the title. bravo!

baci,
