Kurenai no Buta
How many times have I seen this movie? Really hard to tell, must be in the twenties. Nevertheless I still choke up every single time at the part where Porco flies in front of Gina’s garden and she has that flashback of their first flight. Such an amazing moment. I just showed the film to my parents, who are here visiting from Italy, now they know a little more about their granddaughter’s first name.
update- just in time for this post, today some sent me this amazing little videos. 1 and 2. Amazing uh?

It’s perfect. So many subtle naturalistic details (that aren’t naturalistic at all, but amazingly convincing) and beautiful story telling.
I found a cove close to home recently that reminded me of Porco’s hideout. Felt like heaven.

ええ、とてもいい映画だな。 僕の一番好きな所はフィオがマルコの島に泊まっていて、マルコの人間の形を見る所だ。
I love that film, sir. My favorite scene is when Fio is staying on Marco’s island. The WWI pilot ghost story is beautifully done, and also heart-wrenching. It really sheds light on why Marco is so crusty. I also love it when Fio then thinks she sees Marco as a human. It’s just a haunting scene all around – but also very warm.

I love the scene when Fio sees Marco as human, and the slug fest at the end where Marco is forced to confront his humanity. I really empathise with the character at that point.

Where a lot of Miyazaki’s films have spots where I choke up (I think most consistently when Kiki starts to panic about her magic not working), this one was different. Porco didn’t get me until the second the credits started to roll — I guess I wasn’t overwhelmed by any particular scene, but the film as a whole.

you rock enrico.
i love your blog and all the things you say
i love it how you take the time to tell these little important things and take the take to reply once in a while.
this is just some old reply of you i happened to read:
‘Justin- Thanks man. One of the reasons you haven’t seen much of my “work work” is that after storyboarding on Ice Age I started work here at Pixar boarding on Ratatouille for roughly four years (while the last year and a half I’ve been on a new movie). The point though is that these movies sure take a while to make … so Ratatouille is my first actual credit on a Pixar movie, even though I’ve been here since before Finding Nemo. Pretty amazing uh?
An animator that got here at Pixar 5 and half years ago would have worked (with credit) on every movie since Nemo.
That’s one side of working in Story … takes patience …’
it’s so cool to be involved and insighted into your life and work, even as a belgian animation student.
take care amigo,
peace out

It truly is a touching scene Enrico. It helps fill in a little of Marco’s and Gina’s back story and the change in color palette coupled with the always deft musical touch of Hisaishi really create a wonderfully quiet and humorous respite in an often frenetically paced and boisterous film.

I love this film. It is probably my favorite Miyazaki film. Tonari no Totoro is up there near the top too. The neko no basu is absolutely genius. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi will always hold a place in my heart, being it was my first introduction to the amazing films of Miyazaki.
I look forward to seeing the next film you work on. Are you going to make it to Comic-Con this year?

Hey Enrico, I don’t know if you have any interest or not, but I just finished a goofy little comic of Apple Girl, a story from Italian Folktales. It’s kind of annoying to read because you have to keep clicking the little magnifying class, and I’m definitely not a professional illustrator (yet!) but I know you appreciate the book as much as I do, so if you’re interested you should check it out.
please excuse the long, ugly link!

I love this movie as well, Enrico. So many great moments. I recently saw My Neighbors the Yamada’s and absolutely loved it.
