Bunnies by … who?
You must’ve seen this latest spot Passion Picture has made for Sony, really stunning work. Personally I certainly thought of Kozyndan’s work when I saw it. Turns out there’s a huge discussion on the web on the possible plagiarism involved here. Rip off, Homage, no wrong doing ? You decide … here’s Kozyndan’s post about it and here’s a really interesting article giving some perspective. Sounds pretty fishy to me.

Personally I think there is no plagiarism involved here at all.
The essential idea may be very similar, but the execution and the final ad is completely different in every way. Plus, just the concept that the entire ad is done in stopmotion alone is crazy. It must have taken these guys ages to finish this ad!
I always love the Sony Bravia ads, they really stick to the idea of “Color like no other”- their ads is truly something that’s never been done before in any other ads.

Well, these spots are wonderfully made and executed I agree with you on that … and by just watching the ad and seeing their illustration I might have some doubts about the plagiarism myself … BUT reading what Kozyndan state in their blog:
“To add insult to injury, someone from Passion Pictures contacted us almost two years ago asking to see samples of our work (including this panoramic) as they were interested in working with us. We sent them samples and then heard nothing from them ever again. (It should be noted though, that the more likely culprit is the ad firm who hired Passion Pictures, Fallon) ”
now that … if true, and I for one don’t feel they are lying, sure sounds pretty bad doesn’t it ?
Also I can’t help but think that an “inspired by” credit could have made all the difference and made this wonderful spot more of an homage …
One thing makes me feel slightly better about all this and it’s the hope that Kozyndan might end up getting some decent PR out of it … the PR that they should have got in the first place perhaps?
interesting discussion though, no doubt …

Ok I take it back!
I didn’t manage to see a side-by-side comparison of the Kozyndan illustration and the Bravia ad. And now that I see it….they are very very similar indeed.
But still, if Kozyndan is unable to prove that Fallon really did request a sample from them a year ago- the case might just be dismissed. If a company has no prior knowledge of an existing artwork and decides to execute one of their own with a striking similarity to the other, they cannot be held liable.
It’s sucks, but both the ad and the illustration are still awesome.
Great discussion….love your blog. Keep posting interesting ads, short films, movies, etc!
