Sargent and Venice

Last month during my trip to Italy I had the luck of seeing the Sargent and Venice exhibition. It’s a stunning collection of John Singer Sargent watercolors all done on location in Venice (this exhibiton passed through NYC as well). The experience of seeing these pieces actually in Venice was fantastic and inspiring; both Ronnie and I got a chance to see it and it sure made us itching to draw and watercolor away! I own more than a couple of books of Sargent’s work but the reproductions really don’t do these watercolors any justice, up close and personal these pieces are breathtaking. I hope this exhibition will keep on traveling, so more and more people can get a chance to see it. You can find a virtual gallery of Sargent’s work here and some more Venice specific galleries " onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/www.jssgallery.org/Essay/Venice/Sargent_in_Venice.htm_br_/');">here and here.

You’ve just convinced me to travel to Italy. I’m such a huge fan of Sargent. And stupidly, as I’m writing this, I’m realizing I did Paris this summer without seeing Bouguereau.

    Enrico,

I have seen a few pieces of Legion of Honor. As an American artist like Sargent, I hope that Bay Area museum would pick up retrospective on Sargent but unfortunately, both the De Young and Legion have been pretty uninspired recently.

oh wow, what an awesome experience that must have been! Sargent is easily in my top ten painters, the exhibition sounds amazing. Fingers crossed they’ll take the show on the road.

Must’ve been great. I’m a fan of Sargent as well, but not so familiar with his watercolors.

LitPark- Did you miss this show when it was in NYC? If so I guess yes, you’ll just have to go to Venice … ;)

cK- that’s true, not a whole lot of new inspiring stuff in those two museums. The best show I’ve seen around here lately is the Yoshitoshi woodblock prints exhibition at the Asian Museum of Art (nicely coupled with the Tezuka one).

Andy- I really hope so … his portraits are well known but not his watercolors, it’d be nice to see the exhibit travel around the world.

Lee-Roy- oh his watercolors are stunning … so luminous … worth looking into (at least in book form) …

I will try to do that! I certainly like the look of the postcard you’re holding. What a talent, to have such inspired command of oils and watercolors.
