Just yesterday I was wondering when we’d be able to buy that! One more amazing art book to add to my collection…

hey Enrico,
I was just thinking the other day that although you been such an inspiration and force in the blogging and self-publishing worlds (one of the earliest ones too, that I remember), we have never had the fortune of seeing your actual ‘work’ stuff. Can’t wait to check it out.

As much as I like the Studio Ghilbi books, I think that the “The Art of Pixar Books” are much better. The Ghilbi books focuses on the actual animination shots, some great concept designs by Miyazaki whereas the “The Art of ” is more balanced with concept, background, storyboards, lighting and animation. It really shows all the artists iwho are in the background strut their stuff.
Looking forward to seeing your story boards as well as exquisite pastels of Dominique Louis

PS. Next time that you bump into me, check out my biceps. It is due carrying the “Art of ” books to the events for signings

One more thing. I know that I may be stepping into sacred ground. I really do like Studio Ghilbi Art Books as well as Kazuo Oga Art Collection books. But, I think that Art of Pixar Book shows more of the development and/or struggle in getting to the final product. I am sure that there was a struggle in getting character designs of Sulley and Mike drawings until the final ones are accepted which contrasts to the beautiful and exiquisite pastels of background art. For the Ghilbi books, you get only the pulse of God himself, Miyazaki.

Andy- thanks.
Amelia- Hope you’ll like it, there’s some wonderful work in it, as always. We will also raffle one of these guys (and a few other Art of Pixar Books) at the benefit auction on May 20th.
Justin- Thanks man. One of the reasons you haven’t seen much of my “work work” is that after storyboarding on Ice Age I started work here at Pixar boarding on Ratatouille for roughly four years (while the last year and a half I’ve been on a new movie). The point though is that these movies sure take a while to make … so Ratatouille is my first actual credit on a Pixar movie, even though I’ve been here since before Finding Nemo. Pretty amazing uh?
An animator that got here at Pixar 5 and half years ago would have worked (with credit) on every movie since Nemo.
That’s one side of working in Story … takes patience …
Also storyboards are not quite the sexy drawings and paintings that art and design produce for these movies. We draw rough sketches with only grey tones mostly and I can see why, sadly, boards often don’t make it in these “art of books”. The Ratatouille one is peppered through out with boards, I am glad about that.
Someone should make a whole book only of storyboard art … that’d be neat.
Joe- Cool.
cK- Uhm, not sure man, Kiki’s art of book is pretty amazing and it’s filled with tons of imageboards and character studies not only by Miyazaki himself but by Yoshifumi Kondo and many other designers … certainly one of my favorite books. (the tricky part is that everyone draws very similarly there though, so it’s hard to tell who’s done what in those books, especially with the language barrier)
But I see what you’re saying I don’t care too much for too many stillshots from the film in these kind of books … and the Pixar books are good about that … they do contain more variety indeed.
cool, I still haven’t hold one of these books in my hands, look forward to it … might have more comments on al this then …
cheers
Enrico

i just watched the 6 minute preview on youtube and i have to say i haven’t anticipated a film as much as this one in a long time.
it looks flawless so far. maybe this time i’ll treat myself to one of those pixar art books too.

Glad you’re excited about this movie Matt. I am too … I must admit I have mixed feelings about the amount of the movie they are showing. I personally wouldn’t want that many spoilers … but I know they are making a major PR effort that is reaching a lot of people … give and take I guess.
Anyway I finally have the art book in my hands and it’s really nice!
We are getting one copy of the book signed by all artists here at Pixar and we’ll have it as one of the prices of the raffle for our upcoming benefit art auction !

It’s an awesome book. I saw a copy here at Disney. I don’t know if it’s shipping yet, but it’s a must have for anyone who loves and appreciates cool art.
